School representatives should by now have received a booklet on identifying priorities and raisning concerns.
The NUT advice is to call a meeting of members in the school and use the booklet to prioritise the concerns in the school. Then meeet with other unions beforre seeking a meeting with the head to try to negotiate improvements.
The NUT is anxious that as much as possible should be done by consultation but if agreement cannot be reached contact the local association or Essex Division to process a ballot for action. This cannot be done without approval of Regional Office.
I receive regular updates from Hamilton House re the membership which I copy and pass on to secondary school reps. since there membership is very large. I am often told that the list is out of date as people have left, changed schools, retired etc.
The database is dependent on what information HQ receives fromn its current members. If they do not inform HQ the database will obviously be out of date. All members receive a pro forma which they can fill in and return to Hamilton House if their circumstances change. Please draw your members attention to this at appropriate times.
Each school should elect one of its members to act as the School Representative. They are a vital link in the chain between the National and Local officers of the NUT.
Each school should have its own NUT notice board in the staff room . Make sure you read it regularly !
Your school representative will have a great deal of information which may be of use to you. He/She is your first point of contact for any query you may have.
Apart from the NUT News and posters giving information about local meetings
your school Rep. also has a Resource pack containing information under the
following headings: In addition they now have a booklet describing the NUT's guidelines on Workload and Working time Policy.
Mid Essex Association will be organising a Welcome Function for NQT's and for teachers new to the area early in the Autumn term. If you already know the names of NQT's who are coming to your school please let the secretary know so that a personal invitation can be sent to them (marion.wilson@tiscali.co.uk) Reps of course are also invited to come along with their NQT's.
Trainee teachers can ans should become members of the Union. If
they are on the graduate, registered and overseas programme the must use the
full NUT application form.
If they are trainee teachers on a SCITT scheme they should be treated as student
members and use the approppriate form.
All trainee teachers should be made aware of the importance of belonging to
a Union and of the advantages of joinning the NUT.
ASK THEM AND THEY WILL JOIN
You should have received a recruiting leaflet aimed at targeting
Overseas trained teachers to join the NUT provided they have the necessary recognised
teaching qualifications. Please either call a meeting in school or speak individually
to any teacher in your school who come into this category.
ASK THEM AND THEY WILL JOIN.
